ALL ABOUT IRON DOORS

We want to provide you with as much information as you need about custom wrought iron. Below are questions and answers that can help you decide whether a wrought iron door is the right one for your home or building.

How much do iron doors cost?

Typically, an iron door will cost around $125 per square foot, although this may differ depending on the intricacy of the design and any additional features. There is also an additional cost for hardware and the installation service.

Are the doors heavy and hard to open?

Iron is a naturally heavy material, which means that iron doors will be heavy. However, due to how the doors are made and installed, they are not difficult to open at all.

How long does it take to get my iron door made?

Typically, the lead time for making your iron door is around 3-4 months. This is due to a number of factors, including the design process, careful fabrication, and quality assurance measures that we have in place.

What is wrought iron?

Wrought iron literally means ‘worked iron’ and describes a process where the iron is made and manipulated by hand with specialist tools. Typically, this conjures images of iron doors, railings, tables, or outdoor furniture. Other types of iron, such as cast iron, are poured into molds and then cooled.

What is the difference between iron and steel?

On a technical level, iron is a metal, and steel is an alloy. Ultimately, this means that iron is an element that naturally occurs on Earth, whereas steel is a manmade material (a combination of iron and carbon). Steel is stronger than iron and is used more widely for large scale commercial buildings as well as within some residences. Wrought iron is still incredibly strong but slightly more malleable, which makes it perfect for any details or intricacies of design.

Are wrought iron doors maintenance-free?

While wrought iron is very durable, to ensure that your door is kept in good condition and looking beautiful, a small amount of maintenance is required.  We suggest wiping and cleaning your door with Murphy’s oil once every three months for optimum results.

How do I clean an iron door?

Cleaning an iron door is a very simple process. Every three months, you should wipe and clean the door with Murphy’s oil. This should only take a few minutes and will keep your wrought iron door looking beautiful and clean.

How long do iron doors last?

If you maintain your wrought iron doors well, they can last for decades. This is because the metal is naturally resistant to weathering, can withstand extreme temperatures, and may be treated with a protective outer layer.

Are iron doors good for cold climates?

Yes. This is because iron doors are made with special insulation, which makes them perfect for colder climates. This insulation acts as a buffer for the outdoors, meaning that cold air cannot enter the home and heat cannot escape through the doors. This also makes iron doors a more energy efficient option.

Do wrought iron doors get hot?

No. This is also because of the special insulation that is inserted in the doors when they are being made. This will keep the wrought iron doors cool even during the very hot summer months. Additionally, cold air from inside your home when the air conditioning is running will not seep out through the doors. Your household will be both more comfortable during the summer and run more efficiently.
